Suppose that a series of compressed image files need to be sent across a 256 kbps link to support an online consultation. The total size of the compressed image files is 3550 KB. (Remember that a capital K when used to express a file or memory size refers to 1024, not 1000.)

Answer the following questions:

a) Calculate how long would it take to send them (the compressed image files) one after another? (4 Marks)

b) Assume that the series of compressed image files consists of four files, the sizes of the first, second and third files are 0.5 MB, 900 KB, 1000 KB, respectively. Calculate the size of the fourth compressed image file? (4 Marks)

c) Assume the third compressed image file size is changed from 1000 KB into 1.5 MB. Calculate how long would it take to send them (the compressed image files) one after another? (7 Marks)

Bluetooth technology is a cutting-edge open specification that enables short-range wireless connections between desktop and notebook computers, handhelds, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, camera phones, printers, digital cameras and other devices.
Using the internet and other resources (e.g., books and AOU e-library), write a short report explaining the following factors:
• Discuss the frequency bands of operation for the Bluetooth standard. Discuss the reasons for the selection of these frequency bands taking into consideration factors such as interference (avoiding interference) etc. (6 marks)
• Security is a crucial issue in Bluetooth wireless technology. What are the major security modes for Bluetooth access between two devices? Discuss the recently security issues like: bluesnarfing, blue jacking, blue bugging. (6 marks)
• 3G cellular systems also claim to provide wireless data networking facility. Discuss some main differences between the Bluetooth and the 3G cellular systems. (6 marks)
• Discuss the main differences between the Wi-Fi (802. 11g) and the Bluetooth system taking into consideration factors such as Data Rates, Frequency bands and range of operation. (6 marks)

Your report should be between 500 and 600 words in length. Under-length and over-length reports will be penalized.

Question 2: 4G systems
This question carries 40% of the marks for this assignment.
The 4G systems are projected to solve the still-remaining problems of 3G systems. They are designed to provide a wide variety of new services, from high-quality voice to high-definition video to high-data-rate wireless channels. The 4G systems will not only support the next generation mobile services, but also will support the fixed wireless networks. Using the internet and other resources (e.g., books and AOU e-library), write a report explaining the following factors:
• A brief introduction about 4G? (6 marks)
• Explain some basic features of 4G? (6 marks)
• Describe some of the challenges encountered by 4G with their proposed solutions (6 marks)
• Explain briefly some of basic applications of 4G? (6 marks)
• Explain briefly some of the technologies used by 4G like Multicarrier Modulation, Smart Antenna Techniques and Blast system. (6 marks)

2. Taking the speed of the radio signal as 3×108 meters per second, calculate the time taken for a signal to reach a GPS receiver from a GPS satellite at a position 21500 km distant from the receiver. Assume that the speed of the signal is unchanged over the whole path length. Express your answer in milliseconds. (10 marks)

Internet resources, you are asked to write an essay presenting an overview on the standard IEEE 802.11ad while providing its major physical layer specifications (e.g., supported data rate, Modulation bandwidth, and distance coverage) and five potential models of usage. Your essay should contain at least 500 words and the list of references. It should not include unapproved
websites as Wikipedia or like citation. Marks will be deducted in case of essay lacking reliable
references or containing errors in syntax, structure, and style.

Q3. Discovering Wi-Fi Network
You have studied in Block 1 the fundamental concepts, techniques, and mechanisms used in
wireless communication in general and in more particularly in IEEE 802.11 standard. To indepth
your understanding, you will discover the Wi-Fi network in this question through real
practical measurement. Therefore, you should install the Wi-Fi network discovery tool inSSIDer
that you can download it from the official websit ttp://www.inssider.com/downloads/. For being able to answer to the following questions, you should install and run the software on your mobile device. We recommend that you use laptop having Microsoft Windows or Mac as operating system and connected to the network through Wi-Fi.
1. What are the SSIDs of the access points (AP) detected by your mobile device? Prove your answer by providing snapshot of the table listing the relevant information of all the detected APs.
2. Provide the SSID and MAC address of the best AP (i.e., in terms of the quality of the received signal) to be connected to your mobile device if the access is granted.
3. What is the Wi-Fi protocol version used by the best AP and its maximum supported rate?
4. What is the channel number used by the best AP? Determine its lower and upper frequency.
5. Provide the graph of signal strength (in dBm) of every occupied channel. Is there any other less noisy channel that could be selected for the best AP? Clarify your answer.
6. Provide the graph of the signal strength (in dBm) variation over time.
7. Calculate in Watts the average signal power received by your mobile device from the best AP?
8. Which value of signal to noise ratio (SNR) is required for attaining the maximum data rate supported by the used version of Wi-Fi.
