This TMA expects you to produce an essay based on what you have learned in your DD202B course, chaptereleven, “Economics and Economic Change”. It is marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of the overall continuous assessment. This TMA requires you to apply the course concepts to your own experience and to discuss the economic change of such an application.
The TMA is intended to:
• Develop your evaluative skills in measuring total production and income.
• Become familiar with other measures of total production and total income.
The TMA:
Income (Y) in an economy flows from one part to another whenever a transaction takes place. New spending (C) generates new income (Y), which generates further new spending (C), and further new income (Y), and so on. Spending and income continue to circulate around the macro economy in what is referred to as the circular flow of income.The circular flow of income forms the basis for all models of the macro-economy, and understanding the circular flow process is key to explaining how national income, output and expenditure is created over time.
The following diagram shows the circular flow for an economy. It illustrates the interaction of firms and household in markets. This TMA requires you to write a structured essay in which you try to use this diagram to illustrate the flow of spending and money in the economy. Your essay can be written through the following guidance:
Guidance notes for TMA
For this TMA you are required to write a structured essay of no more than 1000 words. This means that your TMA should be in four steps:
Step 1:
Review the chapter material. This TMA is about the nature of the circular flow of income, so you may want to review the section “The Circular of Income”, which begins on page 312 of your text book Economics and Economic Change. Provide brief explanation about the circular flow showing its importance in measuring economy. (20 points)
Step 2:
Use the above diagram to illustrate the interaction of firms, government and households in markets. Explain the flow of spending and money in the economy. How can we measure GDP as the total income received by households? What is the relationship between firms and the government?How the interaction is made between the financial system and the rest of the world? (50 points)
Step 3:
Economists use GDP to measure total production in the economy. For that purpose, we would like GDP to be as comprehensive as possible. Discuss whether there are shortcomings in GDP as a measure of total production and as a Measure of well-being. (30 points)
Your essay should be within the specified range of words, and you must follow the Harvard Style of Referencing. You are expected to present a well structured and organized piece of work that is of your own. Plagiarism will be penalized by deduction of marks. The assessment of the quality of your essay will be based on how you impress the reader (grader) about your knowledge and understanding of the topic. TMA: B121 – Managing in the work place.
Introduction
The aim of this TMA is to familiarize students with the theoretical understanding of how and why managers do what they do in organizations.
Short Business Case
UPS Store
The UPS Store grew out of United Parcel’s acquisition of Mail Boxes Etc. This acquisition happened in 2001. Mail Boxes Etc. providing copying services, a place for individuals to pick up their mail , and mailing services with firms such as UPS.This acquisition by UPS was intended to give the package delivery firm a retail connection. Thereafter, UPS allied itself with office Depot and Staples to provide shipping services in their stores. As a part of enhancing its services UPS has been consistently adding on-line tracking and other possible services.
The goal of developing these connections has been to create a seemless integration of technology that makes it easier for consumers to choose UPS. Thus, there was not a separate technology strategy, but instead, technology was a key part of what enabled the strategy.

TMA Questions

(Based on Block 1) consider the following description of an ICT.
A traffic control center monitors the roads conditions via webcams scattered in different places in the city. Those cameras send the video stream of the road to the traffic control center via dedicated fiber optic cables network.
The traffic center informs the drivers of the vehicles about the roads status by sending short messages to “digital boards” in the road that has some problem (such as congestion, ice, fog, accident, road works …). Those digital boards are connected to the center through the fiber optic cables network.
A user at home with a computer and Internet connection can access the traffic control center web server (where live video streams from webcams is loaded into web pages) to check traffic congestion along a route before going out.

In Block 2 Part 3 you learnt about many wireless technologies, but still there is more. WiMAX is one technology used for wireless wide area networks or wireless metropolitan networks. The following photo depicts in simple way the idea behind it. Search the web to answer the following.

Question 1: (10 marks) In statistics, the Combination is a method of selecting several items or symbols out of a larger group or a data set, where order does not matter. The Combination is represented by or nCk, and calculated from the formula: nCk = n!/(k!(n - k)!) For example , if you have a list of 5 numbers {1,2,3,4,5} ,then 5C2 means you are given a list of 5 number, but you only need to choose 2. The order that you choose them in NOT important. Question 4: (6 marks) As a conclusion of what you have learnt about them, you are asked to compare the Arrays with Stacks and Queues in terms of three of the following: their roles, access restrictions, ease of search, insert or delete operations. Question 5: (12 marks) You are supposed to write a method symmetric that accepts a stack of integers as a parameter and replaces the stack contents with itself plus a symmetrical version of itself (the same elements in the opposite order). For example, suppose a variable s stores the following elements: bottom [10, 50, 19, 54, 30, 67] top After a call of symmetric(s),the stack would store the following elements bottom [10, 50, 19, 54, 30, 67, 67, 30, 54, 19, 50, 10] top Note that the symmetric version is added on to the top of what was originally in the stack. (a) Read through the attached article “Organizational Structure: The Case of Toyota”. As you read through the article create one spray diagram to summarize the case content respecting the conventions, and techniques. It is advised that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words. (15% marks).
(b) Based on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section II “Control”, and based on the content of the article, and taking “Fixing a failing structure” as your goal draw one closed loop control model diagram to show the various inputs, and the transformation process, that can lead to reaching this goal. You need to show all the components of the control model diagram, the inputs’, processes, control (actuator, comparator, sensor), that can lead to goal achievement . Reflect on your diagram (15% marks)
(c) Using an essay format of no more than 2500 words, and based on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section I “Organizations are They Rational”, readings 01 and 07, section III “Structure”, section IV development, section V culture and climate, and section VI “Decision Making” and based on the ideas put forth by Taggart in the attached article:
1- Discuss the concept of organizational structure and assess which type of task related structure is required to meet Toyota’s communication needs. (Word Count 500; 15 Marks)
2- Discuss the concepts of organizational culture and climate and assess Toyota’s culture and climate. (Word count 400; 15 Marks)
3- Assess the extent to which Toyotas structure, culture and climate played a role in its failure to react to the defect problem, (Word count 400; 15 Marks).
4- Discuss the different perspectives on decision making and assess how the decision making process at Toyota has affected its ability to respond to the defect problem (Word count 400; 15 Marks).
5- Discuss the concept of organizational learning and assess whether Toyota is a learning organization; justify your answers with evidence from the case (300 words; 10 Marks).

Guidance to Question 01
For this question you need to read the assigned article carefully and to reflect back on concept file 04 for the theoretical assessment.
(a) At this stage of the course you are expected to have developed good understanding of the purpose of drawing spray diagrams as part of applying the SUDA process for solving a messy situation. A spray diagram is the first type of diagrams drawn in the sensing phase of the SUDA process of mess analysis, in order to summarize the main ideas of a case, or the main components/elements of a situation. Please pay attention to the conventions and make sure that the central topic and other subtopics are relevant, and do make sense to the reader. Go back to T552 (Diagramming) the appendix to refresh your memory about the conventions.
(b) This is your first attempt at drawing a control model diagram. The task should not be challenging though. Refer to Concept file 04 section II “Control”. You need to draw a control model diagram to show how the selected inputs can reach the stated goal. You also need to illustrate clear, relevant, and non-overlapping inputs, clear and accurate transformation process and an output which is consistent with the goal. You also need to specify which organizational entity is in charge of assuming the role of each of the elements/components of the control model (i.e. actuator, sensor, and comparator). The parties in charge of performing each task within the control mechanism should be clearly identified. It is very important that your diagram is specific rather than generic.
(c) Here you need to practice your analytical skills to assess what is required. Remember to start with a good introduction in which you define the assessed topic before moving on to explaining your plan for working on the TMA. In the body you should move on to assess the causes of the problems faced by Toyota and the impact of the organization’s structure, climate and decision making on its reaction to the problem. You also need to evaluate whether Toyota is a learning organization by relying on both theoretical principles and practical examples, and on the ideas presented in the assigned article.
