Question
Colonization was a turning point in the history of English language development that eventually resulted in three circles of English speakers according to Kachru (1992). Discuss the different patterns of settlement and their linguistic consequences. Illustrate with examples a case of at least one developing variety of English in one of the colonized geographical locations of your choice.
Areas of discussion of the TMA’s topic are related to U214A course book 1 English in the World, and particularly Unit 3, Unit3 Readings A &B (pp. 136 -149), and examples of variation in Unit 5.
Important Guidelines
Discussing the TMA’s subject matter has to draw on the following ideas:
1. The patterns of colonization based on the different geographical locations and sociopolitical reasons. (5 pts)
2. The linguistic consequences of colonization and the development of new varieties (5pts)
3. Elaboration on at least one case of colonization and language variation, in the British Isles or beyond (5 pts)
4. The resulting categories of language speakers according to Kachru’s circles. (5pts)
N.B. Students need to read in-depth Unit 3 and Reading A, and think about the TMA questions as they read. Students need to take notes relating to the TMA question. Students may further develop their discussion of reasons for variation and forms by referring to Unit 5 (the parts that are relevant to colonization ONLY). When writing, students need to pay attention to structure, layout and correct language and use appropriate referencing and citation.
